If it is true, what do you use, silicone? Is it true that you should not use plumber's putty to seal the drain on an acrylic bathtub?
Correct. According to the labels of Oatey and Harvey's and the FAQ of Harvey's website you should not use plumber's putty on plastic (acrylic) or marble because the oil in the putty will stain marble and soften plastic. For plastic or marble you can use siliconized acrylic tub sealer latex. Harvey's makes the siliconized acrylic tub sealer latex, it is part number 043010. Lowe's or Home Depot carries this item.
A latex sealer remover is made to safely remove the sealer if you need to remove the fixture in the future.
Don't use plumber's putty on your acrylic tub, only bad things will happen. The answer below is 100% wrong. Is it true that you should not use plumber's putty to seal the drain on an acrylic bathtub?
