Is it true that we only use ten per cent of our brains?

I heard from someone that we could do amazing things with our brain. Like some people can slow down and increase their heart-rate. But theoretically speaking, I also heard that they could also allow themselves to heal faster or to not heal at all, to control their own breathing etc as they are all controlled by the part of the brain that does things for us without us even having to think about it? How true is this and what else, if it is true can we do with our mind if it were possible to control every aspect of our brain and body?Is it true that we only use ten per cent of our brains?
Actually, that is a common misconception. I've heard anywhere between 10-20% of our brains are actually used, but the impression I got is that we only understand about 10-20% of what our brains do. That said, we could be using way more of our brain than we think, but our limits in the field of science have only given us answers to only a small amount of brain matter's usage. We don't have the answers as of now as to what the more complex parts (or seemingly simpler parts, for that matter) actually do for us. The percentage of knowledge and understanding grows as technology and science progresses, and so don't be surprised if that ';percentage of our brain we actually use'; number goes up.Is it true that we only use ten per cent of our brains?
The cliche` statement about using 10 percent of your brain is only partially true.

Most people only utilize 10-20 percent of their brain...at one time. In other words, we use different parts of our brain for different tasks. So, if I'm doing calculus, I might be using 15% of my brain, and when I exercise while listening to music, I might use 12% of my brain...but it's an entirely different part of the brain.

As for meditation and controlling the 'involuntary' responses in your body...sure, this is well documented. It seems amazing to many people because we are not exposed to these ideas at a young age....however, many people have no problem believing in the 'power of prayer'. I tend to think that most 'miracles' are merely the victory of the human mind over itself...
yes we only use 10% to think.

the rest is for the body to control our body and systems.

i dont really think that could be true though... thats really unnesesary
I don't know. I think I use at least 13 1/2% of my brain!! : P

Besides, I'd hate to think that I am as smart as I'll ever be. Yikes!! Now that is frightening!! : S
