Is it true that excessive use of cussing ruins a story?

Like dropping the f-bomb all the time. Some say it doesn't, some say it does so I'm confusedIs it true that excessive use of cussing ruins a story?
It depends on whether the language adds to the characterization, atmosphere, or meaning of the story. Tom Wolfe's novel ';I Am Charlotte Simmons'; uses a lot of swearing, particulary F***, because he's making a point about the way that college students talk. It's believable that his characters would talk this way - if they used very proper, pleasant language, they wouldn't seem real.

So, basically, the use of any kind of language depends on what you're writing. Is it true that excessive use of cussing ruins a story?
It sure is not necessary. My opinion is that the lower the vocabulary the higher the times cussing is used. Most use f-words because they cannot think of an appropriate word. And all that cussing distracts one from the thread of the story.
Constant profanity and obscenity, like any form of highly mannered speech, is difficult to make convincing and entertaining. It's further complicated by the fact that most people who talk that way don't have a lot to say. You have to develop an ear for dialog to know how much is too much. Realize that to some people, any amount is too much, but you probably aren't writing for them.
It shows that you have nothing to say so you substitute it with cursing...I had to go through a limit the amount of curse wors I used in my story but in some cases you got to use to make that statement
It can be a very good writing tool, if used for a specific effect. Just don't use it for the sake of using it, you know?
They're filler words used by people who have limited language skills. More educated people can find better descriptive words.
Yes, I think it ruins the story, unless you want a charecter that you want us to know he's the cussing sort, then fine. But not too much, no one wants to read cuss words all day.
Yes it does for me in books and movies - it is unnecessary and i am sure a better substitute can be use with greater impact than swearing or omg - lol i hate it when people say that
Ask yourself this: what does it contribute to the story? Same thing with movies; what does it contribute to have the guys swearing at each other all the time? So we know they use foul language? Because it's supposed to be funny?

I don't know that it ';ruins'; it per se, but it's generally not necessary and doesn't add anything (except to the author's word count!).
